About Imagination Library
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library was founded in 1995 by Dolly Parton to “[inspire] kids to love to read” and to provide kids with books no matter their family’s income. The program invites parents to enroll their children from birth to age five to have a free, age-appropriate book mailed to them each month until their fifth birthday.
Starting first only in Parton’s hometown county of Sevier, Tennessee, the program quickly became “such a success that in 2000 a national replication effort was underway.” The program collaborates with local affiliate sponsors and has continued to grow, expanding internationally. With the help of local affiliates, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has gifted more than 150 million books to date.
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library of Ohio, (formerly Ohio Governor’s Imagination Library) was officically launched in 2019 under the leadership of Ohio First Lady Fran DeWine with financial support from the Ohio General Assembly and affiliates across the state. Mrs. DeWine was inspired to launch the statewide expansion of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library after seeing the impact it had on her own grandchildren in Greene County. At the time, the program was only available in a few Ohio counties. The Imagination Library of Ohio was officially launched in select Ohio counties to start and gradually expanded to all Ohio counties by November 2020.
