Position Title: CATALOGING ASSISTANT II

Department: TECHNICAL SERVICES

Reports to: TECHNICAL SERVICES MANAGER

Job Classification: LIBRARY ASSISTANT II

Starting salary: ASSISTANT II - $12.50/HR

The Technical Services Cataloging Assistant II is detail-oriented, efficient, able to multi-task and can find solutions for uncommon problems. They should be able to communicate well with team members to keep the workflow steady and moving. An ability to be meticulous and precise in their job duties is essential. An understanding of or background in cataloging is preferred.


Cataloging and Metadata

  • Completes database cataloging, catalogs duplicates, replacements and standing orders in compliance with Central Library Consortium standards
  • Ability to download records from OCLC and modify them appropriately
  • Coordinates discard process and maintains records for supervisor
  • Helps to correct errors within bibliographic records and PAC records

 Communication

  • Work with team members to problem solve and find solutions to cataloging inconsistencies
  • Inform and touch base with librarians about cancelations, problems with their orders or questions about specific details of item records
  • Keep the Business Office appraised of invoice completions and/or problems with orders or invoices

Processing and Workflow

  • Receives orders, organizes boxes in the order they arrived and checks them in against packing lists and invoices
  • Helps maintain cataloging supply inventory
  • Prepares items for linking by checking for damage to items, adding barcodes and location stickers, stamping appropriate materials and noting any genre or price information that is needed
  • Check titles in Polaris for holds to prioritize cataloging of popular materials
  • Working together to maintain a steady workflow is the responsibility of all members of the Tech Systems Department. This requires the necessity of being cross-trained and an understanding of the duties of all members of the team.

Technology

  • Demonstrates general understanding of basic computer skills, library catalog and library-provided equipment and software
  • Proficiency and knowledge of the cataloging work forms in the library’s ILS, Polaris

Physical Demands

  • Ability to handle boxes, cartons or carts weighing up to 30 pounds or more
  • Ability to use a computer

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience working in a library organization
  • Ability to learn and use the library’s integrated library system (ILS) as well as other essential workplace technologies, including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to assess situations and troubleshoot to identify effective solutions
  • Excellent communication skills, especially the ability to communicate with all team members
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, manage time effectively, and demonstrate attention to detail
  • Ability to uphold library professional standards, the library’s mission and strategic plan
  • Cataloging experience and/or familiarity with OCLC records preferred
